Pulling materials and matching color. Sorting through a huge pile and then selecting who's who. Loosers will get to be moulding. Looking specifically for nice wide flake/medullary rays and consistency in color. This is from a nice bundle I Bob @kloesspecialtyhardwoods. It all came from the same area of the forest which helps keep the color consistent. The stain is a bit tricky. I might have M.L.Cambel mix a batch with gilsonite and without. The gilsonite acts as a pigment and fills the pours. This will help pop the flake feature. Without the gilsonite, and just stain, I should get less highlight of the grain on the curly oak. That's my hope. #redoak

The start of a new piece. A built-in bench for a 1920's Bungalow. This will be built with quartersawn red oak to match the wood in the house. The first step for me is seeing some pictures of what a client envisions and then visiting the home to look at the space and surroundings. I want this to look like it's been there and not from a furniture store. The next step is to ponder....I played with a full size piece of cardboard and played with some dimensions and when I was satisfied, took the life size template to the space. Yesterday I started with the foundation of the project- the legs. Now that I have those I can start filling it in. This will all be mortis and tenon, no screws. I also have a bit more research to do with getting the color right on the wood. I included a couple pictures of a similar bench I built. You can see a difference in the legs. They were hollow and not easy to work with when mortising. That bench was white oak and stained a bit different- obviously. This little Hammond saw is about the handiest saw around for consistent, safe, small cuts. Custom millwork for a local remodel. This is a client that I have been making mouldings for an ongoing renovation and update. In fact this pattern is one I run on an old Bellsaw single knife machine. Some more insight on this moulder. A good woodworking friend who I've met years ago and has run a moulder most of his career told me some things to look for. My hold down shoe was not as parallel as I had thought. It was actually tipped. My shoe was also a bit too tight and my outfeed wheel just a bit low. I'm actually waiting for a head to arrive and then I can test to see if this made a difference.

Modifications to the moulder. Unless I catch the material as it exits the moulder, I run the risk of sniping the end. Today I took some extrusion and made a simple outfeed table that I can remove when not in use. On Monday I have a bunch of casing to run and hope to see if this fixed the problem.

Quarter sawn red oak coming to life. The wood is dyed with water-based dye, sanded, and then a layer of asphaltum (tar) thinned with naphtha is applied. Tedious, but the extra work makes a difference. A carpathian elm or cats paw figure, mantle. We have been working on this for a couple weeks. Filling cracks with epoxy, sanding, cutting to size, drilling mounting holes, sanding, doing a deep pour epoxy fill in a corner, sanding, applying oil, sanding sealer, sanding, spraying 1st coat of poly, sanding, and then then final coat of catalyzed poly. Delivery is Monday were the contractors and bricklayer takes over. In a couple months it's home will be open and I'll be able to get some pictures of it in place.
